These schools split last season. The one in Austin was a TTU 62-57 victory. Tech forward TJ Holyfield blocked driving shots by the Horns’ Matt Coleman three times during the final 27 seconds. Davide Moretti made four straight free throws in the final 15 seconds to ensure victory. Before Holyfield went to work defending the basket, Kyler Edwards hit the go-ahead jump shot with 1:38 remaining. Texas never scored again, and Tech finished the job after erasing a 16-point first-half deficit. The Longhorns lost two starters to injuries early in the second half.

The Red Raiders (10-3) were 91-64 blowout winners at Iowa State on Saturday. Tech used a pair of 12-0 runs to make it 54-28 with just over a minute left before the break and that was the game. Before dominating the Cyclones, Texas Tech’s previous two Big 12 wins came by a combined 11 points. Texas Tech has now won five of its last six meetings with the Cyclones, and four in a row.
The Red Raiders had only one turnover in the first half, 10 total in the game, finished shooting 58.9 percent from the field and were 18-for-21 at the free-throw line. The team owned the paint, outscoring ISU by a 42-22 advantage as they moved to 2-0 in conference road games.
Sophomore Kevin McCullar recorded a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds, while Kyler Edwards scored 19 and Mac McClung 18. McClung shot lights out, going 8-for-10 from the field for the Red Raiders who were 33-for-56 from the field. Terrence Shannon, Jr. recorded a career-high six assists to go along with 11 points and five rebounds after coming off a game against Kansas State where he had a career-high 22 points.
“Road wins are something you always remember,” said Texas Tech coach Chris Beard who won his 200th game as an NCAA head coach. “We had some awesome individual performances. There was a lot of unselfishness out there tonight. It was a great road trip for our team as they continue to come together as a team and roles continue getting defined.”
McClung now leads the Red Raiders with 15.3 points per game after getting into double figures for the 10th time this season, while Shannon (13.6), Edwards (10.6) and McCullar (10.3) give Tech four players averaging in double figures.
TTU rose to No. 15 in the AP poll on Monday. The Red Raiders are fifth in adjusted defensive efficiency and are sixth in the nation by limiting opponents to only 58.0 points per game and with a 7.2 turnover margin advantage. The team is second in the nation and leads the Big 12 with 241 free throws made and 340 trips to the line.
Why Bet on Texas? | 2021 NCAA Basketball Expert Analysis
Texas (10-1) won 72-70 at West Virginia on Saturday as Andrew Jones hit the winning three-pointer with 1.8 seconds left. Jones, who earlier in the game became the 39th player in program history to reach the 1,000-career point milestone, posted 16 points while converting 4-of-7 threes. Jones’ career night was also highlighted by a personal accomplishment: the three-year anniversary of his cancer diagnosis, in which he’s now in remission.
Junior guard Courtney Ramey registered a game-high 19 points, five rebounds and a team-best six assists, including the pass on the game-winning basket by Jones. Freshman forward Greg Brown recorded a double-double with 12 points and a team-high 14 rebounds. Senior guard Matt Coleman III tallied 13 points, and sophomore forward Kai Jones added 10 points and four boards.
UT rallied from a nine-point deficit (54-45) with 13:49 left in the contest. This marked the largest deficit that Texas has faced this year (51-43 vs. Villanova at the 12:24 mark of the second half).
The Longhorns have now won seven contests during the Shaka Smart era (last six years) on game-winning field goals in the final 2.0 seconds. Earlier this year, Matt Coleman III converted a foul-line jumper with 0.1 second left to beat then-No. 14/16 North Carolina (Dec. 2). UT improved to 4-0 this year in games decided by three points or less.
Texas continued its best start in Big 12 Conference play (4-0) since the 2010-11 season (started league play with an 11-0 mark that year). UT’s 10-1 record is the program’s best 11-game start since the 2014-15 season (10-1). Texas has won its last six games. Texas improved to 3-1 this season against AP ranked opponents with wins against No. 14/16 North Carolina (neutral site), No. 3/4 Kansas (road) and No. 14/16 West Virginia (road).
The only Big 12 team currently ranked higher than the Longhorns are the No. 2 Baylor Bears.
