The Steelers have lost 37-year-old quarterback Ben Roethlisberger to a season-ending injury. Will he ever play another down in the NFL? Roethlisberger was hurt late in the second quarter of Sunday’s 28-26 loss to the Seattle Seahawks, grabbing his elbow after attempting a pass on the team’s final drive of the half. That elbow will require surgery and Big Ben will be placed on injured reserve.

In Roethlisberger’s absence, second-year quarterback Mason Rudolph nearly led the Steelers to a fourth-quarter comeback in his first career appearance, completing 12 of 19 attempts for 112 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. The 2018 third-round pick will start going forward.

The start of this season has been ugly for the 0-2 Steelers. Roethlisberger had just under six quarters of healthy football. In those six quarters, he completed 35 passes in 62 attempts for 351 yards and zero touchdowns with one interception. Now, he’ll miss the entire season, and the Steelers are on the hook for his $26.2 million cap hit with no production to be gained. His cap hit in 2020 will be an astounding $33.5 million, and a dead-cap hit of $25 million.

Could be that top running back James Conner is out for a while too. He was to undergo tests to determine the severity of his injured knee Monday. Conner went down late in Sunday’s loss to Seattle but not before contributing 45 yards (33 rushing, 12 receiving) and a touchdown on 13 touches. Jaylen Samuels would take his place.

The 49ers improved to 2-0 with a win in Cincinnati on Sunday. Jimmy Garoppolo completed 17-of-25 passes for 297 yards with three touchdowns and an interception. Matt Breida rushed 12 times for 121 yards in the win. With Tevin Coleman out, Breida started and was the featured back.

However, left tackle Joe Staley suffered a fractured left fibula. He’s expected to miss 6-8 weeks. For now, he’ll avoid short-term IR. Staley has a hairline fracture and may not need surgery. Rookie Justin Skule replaced Staley at left tackle and should start in his absence.

The Saints have lost star Drew Brees for around six weeks. Brees left Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Rams with 6:44 left in the first quarter; he was injured on a pass play when his hand met that of Rams All-Pro Aaron Donald on a follow-through. Brees will have surgery to replace a torn ligament in his throwing thumb. Brees has been remarkably durable during his career with the team.

Since 2004, Brees has missed a total of four games, three of which were Week 17 games where his team’s playoff seed was clinched. The only time he missed a game because of injury in that time was 2015 Week 3, when he had a right shoulder injury and missed one game at the Panthers. Brees’ absence will end his streak of starting at least 15 games in 15 straight seasons — the second-longest of its kind behind only Brett Favre.

Teddy Bridgewater is a capable backup with 29 games of starting experience. Bridgewater completed 17-of-30 passes for 165 scoreless yards in the Saints’ Week 2 loss to the Rams. The Saints have invested way more in Bridgewater than any other backup quarterback during the Brees-Sean Payton era — trading a third-round draft pick for him last summer, then re-signing him to a one-year deal worth at least $7.25 million in free agency. Dual-threat quarterback Taysom Hill is another option for the Saints while Brees is sidelined.

Seattle won in Pittsburgh on Sunday, 28-26. Russell Wilson passed for 300 yards and three touchdowns with a 131.0 passer rating. Wilson, who has 201 touchdown passes in 114 career games, surpassed Tom Brady (116 games) as the fifth-fastest player to reach 200 career passing touchdowns in NFL history. Wilson’s first two scores went to tight end Will Dissly from 14 and 12 yards out. Wilson’s third and final score, the game-winner, was a 28-yard hookup with DK Metcalf out of the slot. The Seahawks have raved about how much Dissly crushed his rehab from the torn patellar tendon that ended his rookie season in Week 4 of last year, and it’s evident why.
