Saints vs Bears 2019 NFL Week 7 Betting Lines & Expert Analysis

The Chicago Bears come off their bye week hoping their offensive problems are fixed. Starting quarterbak Mitchell Trubisky will return from a shoulder injury in Sunday’s big matchup with the New Orleans Saints. Chicago is a field-goal NFL betting favorite.

Saints vs Bears Last Meeting

Teams last met in Week 8 of the 2017 season and the Saints were 20-12 home winners. Drew Brees completed 23 of 28 passes for 299 yards but he’s out hurt now. Running backs Mark Ingram and Alvin Kamara each ran for touchdowns for New Orleans.

Chicago had one last chance to tie after Wil Lutz’s 49-yard field goal with 1:35 left, but an interception by Saints rookie cornerback Marshon Lattimore ended that threat. Mitch Trubisky completed 14 of 32 passes for 164 yards in his fourth start for the Bears, while Jordan Howard had 102 yards rushing on 23 carries.

Weather Forecast

  • Partly Cloudy: 17°C/63°F
  • Humidity: 73%
  • Precipitation: 10%
  • Cloud Cover: 35%
  • Wind: 7 mph ENE
  • Stadium Type: Open

Why Bet on New Orleans?

The Saints are 4-0 under backup QB Teddy Bridgewater – Drew Brees will sit again this week – following a 13-6 win in Jacksonville last week. Bridgewater delivered the decisive play in a defensive game. He found Jared Cook for a 4-yard touchdown early in the fourth, putting the Saints ahead for good.

Bridgewater completed 24-of-36 passes for 240 yards and a touchdown while adding three carries for zero yards. He was dropped for three sacks, resulting in a loss of 18 yards. Bridgewater probably should have had another touchdown in the third but instead the Saints settled for a field goal when he airmailed a wide-open Michael Thomas on third-and-goal. Thomas nabbed eight grabs for 89 scoreless yards on 12 targets Sunday.

Alvin Kamara logged 31 yards on 11 carries while adding seven catches for 35 yards on eight targets. Kamara has “a high ankle-type issue” that will limit him in practice this week. Kamara still believes he has “a shot to play” this Sunday against the Bears, but he’s best viewed as questionable. The star running back was clearly slowed by his ankle injury last week, which led to a season-low 11 carries. If Kamara can’t get healthy in time, Latavius Murray would slide into a featured role. The Saints signed veteran RB Zach Zenner on Wednesday while Kamara’s status remains in doubt.

What about the Defense?

The NFL has suspended Saints cornerback P.J. Williams two games for violating the league’s personal-conduct policy. The Saints’ slot corner was arrested for drunk driving in January. Williams, 26, has played more than 80% of the Saints’ snaps this year, with two passes defensed and a sack while starting five of their six games. However, the Saints have good depth in their secondary behind him. Rookie safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson has played about 10 snaps per game in big nickel and dime packages. And the team also has 10th-year veteran Patrick Robinson.

The Saints (5-1) have been special defensively for three consecutive weeks, holding Dallas, Tampa Bay and Jacksonville to an average of 245 yards per game.

Why Bet on Chicago?

The Bears are a disappointing 3-2 and struggling on offense coming off their bye week, a loss in London to Oakland. Entering Week 6, the Bears were 21st in total QBR (44.3), 30th in yards per game (266), 30th in yards per play (4.48), 26th in rushing yards per game (80.6), 29th in rushing yards per attempt (3.42), 30th in passing yards per game (185.4), 30th in net yards per pass attempt (5.58) and 23rd in third down conversion percentage (34.8).

In the last two games, the Bears have rushed for 114 yards on 50 carries, a 2.3-yard average, with a long run of seven yards. In the last 10 games, including the NFC division round loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, the Bears are averaging 17.9 points per game.

Starting QB Mitchell Trubisky missed the team’s last game vs. the Raiders with a shoulder injury but is likely to return. Trubisky was practicing in full Wednesday, but Nagy admitted it’s a “balancing act” and Chase Daniel will get some first-team reps should Trubisky not gain clearance.

Trubisky suffered a dislocated left shoulder and slight labrum tear in the first quarter of Chicago’s victory over the Vikings on Sept. 29. Trubisky rushed for a combined 669 yards and five touchdowns over his first two seasons in the league, but he has run only five times for 21 yards in 2019.

What about the Defense?

Chicago’s defense has taken a hit as the team placed tackle Akiem Hicks on injured reserve with an elbow injury. Hicks had been soliciting second opinions since going down in Week 5. Now he won’t be eligible to return until Week 15 in Green Bay. Hicks is one of the premier run stuffers in all of football.

Saints vs Bears should be a defensive matchup.

Hicks, 29, was selected to his first Pro Bowl in 2018 when he had 7.5 sacks, three forced fumbles and 55 tackles while starting all 16 games. The Bears might replace Hicks in the lineup with defensive tackle Bilal Nichols, who has been sidelined since Week 2 with a broken hand.

2019/20 Chicago Bears Season Betting Info

The Bears have had one serious issue in their roster for probably the last several years—their kickers. Chicago does have two currently, Redford Jones and Chris Blewitt, however, Ryan Pace has been on the hunt for more. Just when Windy City fans thought they had few potential candidates, they didn’t. However, it’s time for the Chicago Bears to be picky after letting Parkey go and starting fresh. Each of the three kickers were in the tryouts, but clearly showed display of the yips, or had some showing shortcomings that the Bears can’t settle with. And so, the quest continues.
